16. Some Encounters
It was exactly a year after Sueâs death. The sun was just appearing on the horizon, and its rays were steadily brightening up the leafy environment all around. Amid the joyful twittering of birds on tree branches, Nana Egyir had made his way to the main gate of the Gatekeepers Foundation. He wished to inspect the final preparations for the programme that morning to honour three very special people. Artisans had toiled at the site the evening before and were back to work at first light to complete the preparations. And now a new gate, and the monumental arch which had recently been constructed over it, had both been draped in colourful fabric to conceal the final work from the eyes of onlookers. Workmen could still be seen dashing around here and there putting final touches to the preparations. It was while Nana Egyir was quietly surveying the activities around him that a young couple jogged by where he stood and stopped.
âSir, you need to be honoured as well. Youâve been so influential to this project,â panted the woman.
Nana Egyir smiled and wiped dust from his hand with a handkerchief.
âIâm Khursheda from Uzbekistan and my fiancé, Thomas, is from Cameroon,â she continued.
âCameroon!â Nana Egyir beamed. âI know Cameroon very well,â he said proudly. âI was there some two years ago, visiting old friends from my days in Americaâa Bahamian-German couple stationed there... Interesting country... Which part of Cameroon do you come from?â
âFrom a small village not far from Mount Cameroon, sir.â
âUh, Mount Cameroon: tallest mountain in West and Central Africa!â
âBut Nana, have you heard the news?â Khursheda sought to change the topic. âLast month, I heard on television that Bibiriba has been listed amongst the fastest growing cities on the planet; and now, on the news this very morning, Bibiriba has been voted one of the most diverse of all cities on earth. Bibiriba is always on the news these days. Itâs as if it has suddenly become the centre of the world!â
âWell, itâs literally near the centre of the earth,â Nana Egyir preached.
âReally?â
âYes; see the Atlantic Ocean over there? Of course, you canât see it from here, but we know itâs a few hundred metres from here. The equator, which is latitude zero, is some distance from here in that ocean. The Greenwich meridian, which is longitude zero, passes near Accra, less than seventy kilometres east of here. So here we are, very close to coordinates zero-zero, which is the centre of the earth.â He stood akimbo and looked at them smiling. âBeing near the centre of the earth,â he quipped, âis it not fitting that world-shaking initiatives should have originated from here?â
âOh, Nana, itâs so exciting! I didnât really know we are so close to the centre of the earth!â exclaimed Khursheda. âThat makes Accra the capital of the world.â
âWell said; hope the UN is listening!â Nana Egyir joked.
âBut Nana, geographically, itâs rather Israel which is at the centre of the earth, isnât it?â Thomas pointed out with an intellectual look on his face.
